2014

I came to Tokyo in Golden Week 1989 for a two week vacation. I had been a worker in the art industry in New York and was feeling pretty bad about it.

Japan was a breath of fresh air. How often does a person get a new life just handed to them? I took it and am still here.

I hadn’t intended to stay. I didn't bring any paints, and for a while did not miss painting, but soon fell back on old ways. I banged a paint box together from scrap wood and bought some Japanese oils and brushes and I was at it again. Walking the back streets around the Gaijin house in OizumiGakuen, on the edge od tokyo where I was

staying.  Little farmer's fields were squeezed and surrounded buy jumbles of houses. Such a delight. Everything so new and so alive. The houses danced. I painted what I saw, as I had done in New York.

Summer turned to winter, and winter to spring. As I painted with the oils as I played with ink. The ink got more interesting and in another year I was only working with the ink. I have been at it for 25 years now, exhibition every year in galleries and small museums, living from exhibition to exhibition. Along the way happened a family, some beautiful children, plenty of mistakes and missteps and a whole lot of fun.

My next exhibition is coming up in the autumn. I hope to see you there.
